Medicare Supplement vs Medicare Advantage

Original Medicare

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage

Original Medicare is comprised of Part A (Hospital Coverage)  and Part B (Medical Coverage) which together cover inpatient and outpatient medical services, but do not cover things like self -administered prescription drugs, most dental treatment, eye glasses and contacts (except following cataract surgery), hearing aids etc. Original Medicare has copayments, deductibles and coinsurances that you are required to pay. Original Medicare has no networks  you can go to any hospital or medical provider that is permitted to bill Medicare for their services. To get prescription coverage you must purchase a stand alone drug plan offered by a Medicare approved private Health insurance company.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage is also called Medicare Part C.  Medicare Advantage plans are plans offered by Medicare approved private Health Insurance Companies that cover all of the same services that are covered by Original Medicare. Most MA plans have a network of doctors and hospitals you must choose from, and  include coverage for things that Original Medicare (Part A & B) does not cover, like prescription drugs, vision, dental etc... Medicare Advantage plans have copays for each service you receive, and many plans have a $0 monthly premium.
